Desert Sage Academy

Students, Parents, Community,

Welcome to Mr. Haack’s Class at Desert Sage Academy and the 2023-2024 school year! I am Mr. Haack and I have been teaching in the Santa Fe area for 18 years. I look forward to a great year of learning with my students! I encourage students/parents to use the resources on this website to ensure a successful experience in my classes.

Class Schedule

Desert Sage is now fully remote. You can locate my class links and those of your other teachers here: Student Classes. In addition to these synchronous remote courses, we also provide Office Hours, or times when students can meet with a teacher. These office hours can be either remote or in-person. Please email your teacher if you would like to schedule a remote time. If you would like to come visit in-person, please review the available Office Hours. Once you have reviewed these hours and know what times you would like to visit, simply stop by the front office and sign in and fill out the Google Form for student visitors.

Class Resources

All of my instructional resources can be located through your Canvas course. This year I put all subjects in one Canvas course to make things easier for both me and students. Just make sure to look at PowerSchool and verify what course(s) you are taking with me before you start doing assignments. To find the different assignments, click Modules in Canvas on the sidebar.

Also, please only use Canvas direct messages to contact me once the year begins (not email). Using Canvas will help me keep student communication in a special location and ensure more timely responses.

Students will often need Extra Help. Many resources for targeted skill development are provided on Canvas as well as links to Khan Academy courses where I can provide lessons / skills tailored to the individual student. Students should check Canvas for all the information, however, I do provide the Khan Academy course join links here as a courtesy:

Blended Learning & Standards Based Grading

Desert Sage Academy underwent many changes over the summer. For one, we are now fully remote (synchronous). Secondly, we are now using Standards Based Grading together with Imagine Learning (formerly Edgenuity) and teacher assessments. Imagine Learning is now merely for practice and the grades/scores listed in that system are not your final grade in the course. Instead, your final grade is determined by the teacher assessing standards based assessments. Those assessments are measured using proficiency scales (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) that are populated with different success criteria aligned to the district’s power standards. Mr. Haack also leverages Khan Academy and Kuta Software’s targeted skill worksheets which means that the math courses blend curriculum together from three different sources. Mr. Haack only uses high quality assessments developed by experts experienced in assessment design. With few exceptions, Mr. Haack leverages the Shell Centre lessons for his class assessments although he can use the tasks or tests they provide too. Assessments, whether summative (Shell Centre/equivalent) activities or smaller formative lessons, are all stored and turned in using the Canvas learning management system (LMS) as to whether they are complete/incomplete. Final grades on those assignmetns submitted in Canvas, are issued solely on Power School by the quarter.
